Yuming Zhu Sumi-e Workshop: Sunday, Oct 6th
“From Bamboo, Chrysanthemum to Landscape”
This workshop will concentrate on traditional Sumi-e subjects but paint with authentic and modern way to express the spirit of Sumi art. Traditional brush stroke and contemporary techs will be learned and practiced to express the joyful yet sentimental feeling of the early Autumn Chrysanthemum and bamboo. Western color theory in comparing Sumi color and ink will be discussed and practice on rice paper in Sumi style.
In the afternoon, we will learn to paint scene around us, and learn how to interpret and compose in Sumi art unique style. Instructor will demo transfer sketch of landscape form sketch books, and students are encouraged to bring their own sketch book, or photos of landscape to paint.
This workshop welcomes beginning and professional artists. We will work a lot on individual base. Painters new to Sumi-e, and those experienced in East Asian watercolor painting will be introduced and encouraged to look the “World” in a different artistic perspective. There will be demos and one-on-one attention, hands-on painting and group critique.
About the Artist
Yuming Zhu is a very passionate and well-known artist in the Great Seattle area. Sumi/Chinese Watercolor, Oil and Pastel are the mediums Yuming loves to express himself with. He participated in the “Five Thoughts of Asian Art” program that was offered through the Seattle Art Museum and KCTS Channel 9. Yuming was recognizes as Master Sumi artist and top 50 Emerging artists in US by Art Business Magazine. He continues teaching sumi painting and calligraphy at community colleges, art centers at the Greater Seattle area and nation-wide. Yuming participated as an artist and paint for the Amazon Movie Series : ”The Man in the High Castle” which was nominated for EMMA.
