Wes is an accomplished watercolor artist from Coeur D' Alene. He is an instructor at North Idaho College and provides occasional weekend classes at Spokane Art Supply. His classes cover watercolor, gouache, and drawing techniques.

 2025 Classes:

Tonal & Full Color Watercolor Painting - Sat, Sept 27th & Sun, Sept 28th   
10am-4pm    $100.00

Description: Learn to create effective compositions and value sketches, paint value-
based tonal watercolors and full color paintings. The first day will concentrate on
drawing eye-catching, dramatic compositions and painting them using a limited tonal palette. The second day explores color interactions and full-color watercolor paintings.

Supply List:
Photos and pictures of subjects that interest you. 
An 8.5 by 11 or 9 by 12 with a slight amount of tooth
a soft 2B and graphite sticks
A 22 by 30 inch all cotton, cold pressed watercolor paper.
A one-inch flat and a #10 or #12 round watercolor brush.

The following tube watercolors: Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Quinacridone Rose or Alizarin Crimson, and Hansa or Azo Yellow. If you have orange, green and purple tubes, bring them along.

A palette with a large mixing area, a piece of plywood support board measuring 13 by 17 inches that is smooth on one side, a large water bucket like a yogurt container, paper towels
one-inch masking tape.

 

Charcoal & Pastel Drawing and Painting - Sat, Oct 11th & Sun, Oct 12th

Description: Learn to draw accurately and expressively using charcoal and pastels.

Supply List
Subject Reference Materials: Photographs and magazine pictures of various still-lifes, people, buildings, and landscapes. Try to select pictures that have middle to large size shapes.
Drawing Materials: One sheet of 30 by 40-inch cold press illustration board, an 18 x 24-inch pad of rough newsprint, and a sketchbook.
For charcoal: Soft vine charcoal, soft compressed charcoal and a medium charcoal pencil. For pastel: A set of assorted color hard pastels (like the 12 color NuPastel set) and some appealing soft pastels. In addition, bring a sharp jack knife or utility knife, a single-edged razor blade, a clean, large palette knife, a soft cloth, a sponge brush, a round watercolor brush, a blending stump, and fixative spray such as Spectrafix (which can be used indoors).

Plywood or Rigid Foam Support Board: Measuring at least 24 by 18 inches.
Masking tape. Plastic table cloth. Protective Face Mask to reduce dust inhalation.

Painting Small (and Large!) Watercolors - Sat, Nov 8th & Sun, Nov 9th

Workshop Description: Learn how to paint small and large watercolors.

Subject Reference Materials: Bring photographs of subjects that interest you.
Drawing Materials: A No. 2 school pencil, eraser, and 8.5 by 11 sketchbook that can handle watercolor washes.
Watercolor Paper: One 30 by 40-inch cold press medium or heavy weight watercolor board. A second choice would be 30 by 40-inch cold press medium or heavy weight illustration board.
A support plywood or foam board that can hold a 20 by 30-inch watercolor or illustration board.
Brushes: A one-inch and two-inch flat and both a #8 and #12 (or larger) round watercolor brush.
Painting Supplies: Tubes of the following watercolors: Hansa Yellow, Quinacridone Rose, and
Ultramarine Blue (or their equivalents).
Palette: A large white plastic or porcelain dinner plate or white palette you own.
