Wes is an accomplished watercolor artist from Coeur D' Alene. He is an instructor at North Idaho College and provides occasional weekend classes at Spokane Art Supply. His classes cover watercolor, gouache, and drawing techniques.

Graphite and Colored Pencil Drawing - Sat, Feb 14th & Sun, Feb 15th

Description: Learn how to use graphite pencils to draw compositions and insert values and bring your drawings to life with colored pencils.
Supply List
Subject Reference Materials: A still life setup of small colorful objects that you can arrange in different compositions to draw and color. Photographs and magazine pictures of various still lifes, people, buildings, and landscapes. Try to select pictures that have middle to large shapes.
Drawing Materials: Either a 20 by 30-inch cold pressed illustration board or an all-cotton 2 or 4-ply matboard (The paper needs to have a slight tooth.), a spiral bound cold pressed sketchbook (such as a 9 by 12-inch Aquabee Super Deluxe or Strathmore 400 Series), a Prismacolor Black No. 935 pencil, 2B and 6B pencils, colored pencils (A primary yellow, red and blue, white, burnt umber and a colorless pencil for blending), an eraser and a hand-held pencil sharpener. We will be using colored pencils dry, so wax or oil-based colored pencils would work, as would watercolor pencils. Look for brands such as Prismacolor, Derwent, Lyra, Faber-Castell, Koh-i-noor, Bruynzeel, and Caran D’Ache.
Plywood Support Board: Measuring at least 24 by 18 inches. Masking Tape.

Charcoal Explorations
Description: Learn to accurately and expressively draw using charcoal

Supply List
Subject Reference Materials: Pictures of various still-lifes, people, buildings, and landscapes, preferably in black and white. Try to select pictures that have middle to large size shapes.
Drawing Materials: One sheet of 30 by 40-inch cold press illustration board and an 18 x 24-inch pad of rough newsprint. Soft vine charcoal, soft compressed charcoal, a medium charcoal pencil and a piece of white charcoal. In addition, bring a sharp jack knife or utility knife, a single-edged razor blade, a clean, large palette knife, a soft cloth, a sponge brush, a round watercolor brush, a blending stump, and fixative spray, such as Spectra-Fix.
Plywood or Rigid Foam Support Board: Measuring at least 24 by 18 inches.
Masking tape. Plastic tablecloth. Protective face mask to reduce dust inhalation.

Paint Traditional & Experimental Watercolors

Class Description: Learn to use traditional and experimental watercolor painting materials and techniques.
SUPPLY LIST
Subject Reference Materials: Bring photographs of subjects that interest you.
Drawing Materials: A No. 2 school pencil, eraser, an 8.5 by 11-inch sketchbook that can handle washes.
Watercolor Paper: Two full sheets (22 by 30 inches) of Arches or Fabriano all-cotton, 140 lb. cold press paper.
Support Board: A plywood board measuring approximately 13 by 17 inches, smooth on one side.
Brushes: A one-inch flat and a No. 8, 10, or 12 round watercolor brush. Other Tools: Brayers, sponges, old credit cards, stencils, toothbrushes, tissue, plastic wrap, spatulas, palette knife, newspaper.
Watercolor Paints: Artist quality tube paints of the following colors, or their equivalents: Hansa Yellow, Quinacridone Rose, and Ultramarine Blue and a tube of Titanium White Gouache. If you have other watercolor and gouache colors, bring them along.
Palette: A large, undivided white plastic or porcelain dinner plate or other white palette you own.
Water Container: A wide-mouth container that holds at least a quart of water.
One-Inch Masking Tape. Paper Towels. A Plastic Tablecloth.

Mixed Media Paining

Description: Explore designs of realistic and abstract subjects using a combination of media. Emphasis will be placed on experimentation.

Painting Supplies: Watercolors, colored pencils, inks, acrylics, other water-based media, tissue paper, and acrylic soft gel medium, palette knives, magazines, scissors, single edged razor blades.
Palette: A large white plastic or porcelain dinner plate or other white palette you own.
Water Container: A wide mouth container that holds at least a quart of water.
